The following plaque can be seen at the Martin dam visitor's center:
THIS PLAQUE COMMEMORATES THE FIRST VISIT TO CHEROKEE BLUFFS, THE ORIGINAL NAME OF THIS
DEVELOPMENT, BY JAMES MITCHELL IN 1911. AT WHICH PLACE HE MET THE OWNERS OF THE SITE.
HERE MR. MITCHELL ALSO MET THOMAS W. MARTIN AND ANNOUNCED HIS DECISION TO CREATE A POWER
PLANT AND DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM TO SERVE THE PUBLIC, AND REQUESTED MR. MARTIN TO JOIN HIM AS
COUNSEL FOR THE NEW ENTERPRISE.
IN JUNE, 1919 MR. MITCHELL SUFFERED A CEREBRAL HEMORRHAGE FROM WHICH HE DIED SOON AFTERWORDS.
THE DIRECTORS AUTHORIZED MR. MARTIN, THEN VICE PRESIDENT AND GENERAL COUNSEL, TO ASSUME THE
EXECUTIVE DUTIES, AND THIS WAS FOLLOWED BY HIS ELECTION AS PRESIDENT AND AS CHAIRMAN OF THE
BOARD. UNDER HIS DIRECTION AND INSPIRATION, THE ELECTRIC POWER SYSTEM FIRST ENVISIONED WAS
BROUGHT TO FRUITATION AND EXTENDED FAR BEYOND THE ORIGINAL CONCEPT.
