Fall Crappie fishing on Lake Martin is on the increase now that we have had some cooler nights. Those long days of summer catching just one or two are gone and if you want to catch a mess of Crappie, all you have to do is get out there! They are stacking up around the bridges and at brushy drop-offs in creek channels. It is reported that our best Crappie fishing is in the upper areas of the Lake around Wind Creek State Park and Elkahatchee Creek. With the water down it's a good time to check out drop offs and structure locations. You can locate several honey holes to go back to when the water returns to its normal pool. Check out blow downs that you come across. Also ask your local bass guides where they are coming across schools of Crappie. They don't mind telling you about good places to try. The baits of choice are small Shiners and Rosy Red Tuffies. Also Jordan's Deer Hair Jigs are catching their share.
Lake Martin has some of the best Crappie fishing in the southeast with large fish being caught regularly. The current state record White Crappie was caught here in May of 2000 weighing in at 4 lbs. 9 oz. I think there's one out there larger than that! And it's about time to break that record!
Jason Shockley was by this week showing off photos of his latest great Largemouth Bass catch. He caught this beauty in about 3 foot of water in the Sandy Creek area. He was trying out some of the new colors that he had painted and caught 6 fish on his new Baby Stripe Lure and 3 more pulled off at the boat. All the fish were shallow and close to cover (tree tops and shade from docks that are still in the water). He fished for about 4 hours from 11 AM - 3 PM. Pretty impressive action for a new lure!
Chad Miller came by with one of the best fishing stories that I have ever heard and the fish to prove it! He and his son Jeremy were fishing a tournament this past weekend on Lake Martin. Chad was using a top water lure and had located a Largemouth Bass that he really wanted for the weigh-in. The Largemouth took the lure and spit it right out in front of him. Along came a Spotted Bass, took it right up and dove for the brush where he was immediately swallowed up by a Catfish. Chad wrestled that monster in, got the Spotted Bass out of the Catfishs mouth to weigh-in and brought the Catfish by for me to weigh and make a photo! He said the 2 - lb. Spotted Bass was pretty tore up and wasnt big enough to help him win the tournament. By the way, the Catfish weighed 13 lbs. Jeremy is just standing back there grinning as his dad tells the story! What a day! Chad got more action on one cast than most of us get in a whole day of fishing. Thanks for sharing the story Chad; those true ones are the best ones!
