October Fishing on Lake Martin

October is here and there are so many fish being caught on Lake Martin, I hardly know where to start!

Chad and Jeremy Miller were by Tuesday afternoon and reported they had a great afternoon of fishing on Monday, catching 19 nice bass over brush piles that you could see in the main river run.  They were in about 12’ of water and the fish were suspended at about 8’.  They caught these bass on small shiners.  They were headed out again along with Henry Colley and a bucket full of shiners on Wednesday.  I have to tell you that Chad is one of my favorite people.  Any man that has John 3:16 on the windshield of his boat is TOPS in my book!

My buddy, Tom (Catfish King) Smyth, was by later that same day reporting that he had been fishing for Catfish and had caught four really nice ones.  But the one that got away took the cake.  He had about a 15 or 20 pound Carp on the line, but lost him. Boy, what a fight!  Now we call Carp trash fish here around Lake Martin.  But Tom was quick to remind me that people up north, some even in north Alabama, love Carp.  They pressure cook them and cook fish cakes out of them.  Tom says they are really good eatin’, and if Tom says it, I believe it!

Another Catfishing buddy, D.J. and his dad did some Catfishing near the 280 bridge last Saturday.  They fished around logs and bridge pilings with worms, chicken livers and crickets.  Most of the catfish they caught were just good eating size providing enough fish for a family fish fry on Saturday night.  Now that’s the way to end a good day of fishing!

Larry Collins and Doug Thompson caught 44 small, squealer size Catfish on the upper end of the lake using Night Crawlers.  It seemed there was no difference in the amounts caught on plain Night Crawlers and the Chartreuse ones.  Larry didn’t tell Doug that he had the Chartreuse ones on his end of the boat thinking he would outfish Doug.  It didn’t work this time!  Doug, you know you have to watch out for that Larry!!!  He’ll pull a fast one on you if you’re not careful!

Reed was out fishing Saturday morning.  He had great luck fishing for Bass with Spottails bringing in a nice catch.  He was fishing 3-4’ deep around Trillium anchored at about 16’.  Most that he caught were small and he released them.  He did keep 3 really nice ones weighing 2 – 3 lbs.  and we had a nice dinner of fried bass.  The only problem with Reed’s fishing trip was he didn’t take me!!!

You can contact me by email at dduck821@windstream.net with your latest best fishing story or any hints you would like to pass along.  I would also love to get photos of your biggest catches.  Together we’ll fish Lake Martin bringing in those big catches and telling even bigger stories!
