Fall Fever
Kowaliga Live Bait and Tackle
Posted: 9/9/2007 Deborah Duck Fall Fever! The cool mornings are giving it to me and I’m lovin’ it! The water temperature is cooling down in the lake and the fish are moving. Speaking of Fall Fever, there is going to be a Fall Fever Striper Tournament on Chad Miller checked in with me this week saying he fished all day last Saturday. The heat factor is not there like it has been so there was no going in for him in the middle of the day. It’s easier at stay out there if your making some good catches . . . and catch them, he did! He was fishing the main river humps mostly using top water lures in the AM and shaky head worms in the PM. As the water cools, the bait fish are moving up into the creeks. Watch to see them schooling and the fish are feeding after them heading up into the mouths of those creeks now. I had a Striper report from a man named “Fred” this week. His girlfriend caught a 2” Bream, and then caught a 12 pound Striper on the first cast of her first Striper fishing trip. Needless to say, Fred has to go fishing a lot now because his girlfriend is “hooked” too! He catches Stripes every time he goes out with a couple of 10 – 20 pounders each week. He fishes in 100’ of water at about 30’deep. He enjoys eating those Stripes including the bigger ones. He filets them, cuts out the red streak and soaks them in salt water over night . . . then cuts them in big chunks and fries them. One good fishing tip is when you are fishing for Stripe, loosen your drag. If not, they’ll pop that line almost as soon as they hit it. They are going to run! You just need to let your catch go and wear him out. Reel him in as you feel slack coming in. When he sees the boat, he’s going to make another run for it. Let him go! This works in deep water. If you are fishing around timbers or bridge pilings, they break the line much easier. It takes patience to land a big Stripe and it is so much fun. So let’s go Stripe fishing in this cooler weather, and keep the net handy! Watch next week for information about a very successful local tournament fisherman who paints his own lures. You can contact me by email at dduck821@windstream.net with your latest best fishing story or any hints you would like to pass along. I would also love to get photos of your biggest catches. Together we’ll fish
