Labor Day is just around the corner and is called the official end of summer.  I would tend to disagree with that given the temperatures we have been bombarded with over the last two weeks.  My last count was 14 days over 100, and I don’t ever remember this many hot, hot days in August!

The hot weather is not stopping the Lake Martin fishing.  I have had angler after angler tell me that is it just crazy how much the water is down and how much it has helped their fishing!  Winter fisherman on Lake Martin have always raved about the numbers of fish they can catch here, and now those who venture out are experiencing that same fun!

Those reporting to me this week had a lot of luck on top water with black and white jitterbugs in the early morning from daylight until around 8:00 AM. Up in the warmer part of the day they were using Watermelon Seed Worms in shaded cover. I would also suggest looking for bass suspended on points and use a Carolina Rig.  Those bass are out there and they are biting!

Tom Smyth from Notasulga was by to see me this week.  He loves fishing Lake Martin.  Tom is a fisherman from the old school.  He was sharing some of his catfish techniques with me.  He has a menu stocked full of goodies that catfish cannot resist!  He uses 15% laying pellets to draw them in.  He says they come running when you put those pellets out.  The pellets float to the bottom and attract the catfish very quickly.  Then you can use whatever bait you want. . . Dough Bait, Wigglers, Minnows, Chicken Livers… you name it.  He says they’ll bite anything once they get into those pellets!   Another of his favorites is white mini marshmallows. (It’s too hot to drink hot chocolate anyway!)  Put about 3 marshmallows on a hook. You need to leave those out for a while to harden up, if not they just fall apart and float to the top of the water.  But Tom’s favorite is sponge bait!  Yes, that right . . . sponge, like your mama used to wash dishes, he prefers yellow.   Cut the sponge in about 1” squares, soak it in anise oil (the kind you use for baking) or that awful smelling scented stuff you buy at your local tackle store and bury a treble hook down into it.  He says they can’t resist it!  These are tried and true fishing baits that Tom has used for years and he has caught trophy catfish and the numbers to boast about.

I have received a report of trout being caught on Yates Lake. I am doing some research and expect to be posting an article within the next couple of weeks regarding this.  If you have caught a trout in Lake Martin or have information that would be helpful to me, please contact me. You can contact me by email at dduck821@windstream.net with your latest best fishing story or any hints you would like to pass along.  I would also love to get photos of your biggest catches.  Together we’ll fish Lake Martin bringing in those big catches and telling even bigger stories!
